If you can't beat them, join them: the University of Alberta system description
We describe our approach and experiments in the context of the CoNLLSIGMORPHON 2017 Shared Task on Universal Morphological Reinflection. We combine a discriminative transduction system with neural models. The results on five languages show that our approach works well in the low-resource setting. We also investigate adaptations designed to handle small training sets.

Though exceptions spring readily to mind, most scientists are essentially rational creatures, not given to hyperbole on a public stage. In contrast to the extravagant approaches often used by television producers, and by campaigners against animal experimentation or gene technology, scientists invariably want reason to win the day. This is probably a mistake, an echo of the desiccated objectivi...
متن کاملIf You Can't Beat Them Join Them: Handcrafted Features Complement Neural Nets for Non-Factoid Answer Reranking
We show that a neural approach to the task of non-factoid answer reranking can benefit from the inclusion of tried-and-tested handcrafted features. We present a novel neural network architecture based on a combination of recurrent neural networks that are used to encode questions and answers, and a multilayer perceptron. We show how this approach can be combined with additional features, in par...
متن کاملForeskins: leave them alone.
Continuing with only clinically indicated circumcisions, I occasionally used the foreskin as a flap to cover degloved digits (anchoring the hand to the thigh with sutures and strapping it for a few days) and also as a free skin graft and in hypospadias repair. The foreskin was used most dramatically in scrotal elephantiasis. Here the mass is lifted by assistants and a tourniquet is wound severa...
متن کاملControversies of surviving sepsis campaign bundles: should we use them?
Sepsis accounts for a huge number of deaths in intensive care units all over the world. In 2002, Surviving Sepsis Campaign (SSC) was launched, targeting a mortality reduction of 25% in 5 years. Treatment guidelines were developed, published in 2004 and revised in 2007. An educational program was initiated based on bundles in which 11 of those guidelines were put together to facilitate their ass...
